Deimos is the smaller and outer of the two moons of Mars, an irregular body measuring 15 × 12 × 11 km. Its name means “terror”: in myth it is the brother of Phobos.
It looks smoother than Phobos because some of its craters are partly filled in. It is covered by a layer of regolith, rock pulverised by meteorites, perhaps up to 100 m deep.
